Daily dinosaur #9: Megaraptor
Megaraptor, name meaning “large thief” was a dinosaur from the late cretaceous about 90-88 million years ago and lived in what would be modern day Argentina. Megaraptor has one described species, Megaraptor namunhauiquii and belongs to the family Megaraptoridae which included dinosaurs like Australovenator, Aerosteon and the famous Maip macrothorax, despite their family name having the word raptor in it they’re more often thought to be closer related to tyrannosaurs than actual dromaeosaurs like Velociraptor. These predators earned their name due to their size, at about 7.5-9 feet at the hip and about 2,200-2,900 pounds these predators would’ve towered over an adult man and they used that giant sickle claw on their thumbs around 14 inches long to rip through prey. In jwa the Megaraptor is quite inaccurate with it having shorter and quite flimsy looking arms along with their sickle claws also being quite small, Megaraptor is also a Europe exclusive dinosaur even though as mentioned it was found in South America.
