Conspiracy or Not?
Like all of 2025, this past weekend was not short of breaking news. By now youâve all heard about the death of Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, if you havenât, now you have. While many conspiracy theories are floating around, such as whether Vance led to the Popeâs demise, this moment in history illustrates a profound scene that seemingly reflects the era we are in. What makes this moment so significant, and what should we be watching for while many focus on âconspiracy?â
The Pope vs. The Christian Right
Anyone who was raised in an even moderately religious Christian household is aware of the different sects of Christianity. There are different denominations stemming from three major branches: Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, and Eastern Orthodoxy, and they all hate each other.
The conflict between Protestants and Catholics is not new, but their struggle within the context of American history is quite fascinating. These major religious groups have consistently clashed, with Protestants denying that the Pope has any connection to the Word of God. Since 49% of American Christians identify as Protestants, and Catholics account for about 23%, a significant portion of the American population does not follow the ways of the Vatican and does not regard the Holy City as a mecca. In fact, Pope Francisâ liberal views have scandalized conservatives and those on the right since he was nominated to be Pope.
The Pope vs. the Trump Administration
The Trump regime has embraced this tactic, denouncing the Popeâs messaging at every turn. Since 2013, Pope Francis has left a legacy that appeared to propel the religion forward, preaching kindness and empathy, while shirking formal regalia in favor of sensible practices. From carrying his own bags to suggesting that gay people are people too, there hasnât been much that the Pope didnât address.
âThe Pope has been critical of Trump and his policies from the very beginning, arguing that his determination to âbuild a wallâ is not Christian-like. Trump, who partners with Evangelical leaders and organizations and uses the Christian Right as a tool (much like they are using him), does not appreciate it when actual Christians criticize him. Trump, ever the consummate dickhead, did not appreciate the Pope pointing out his hypocrisy.â
